I then tried everything I knew to do: safe mode, recovery mode, PRAM, diagnostics, network recovery, hardware test (short and long), SMC reset, everything is unplugged except a keyboard and mouse, and have tried re-installing OS from a USB boot drive (worked once, but then the freeze happened again about 3 minutes into using). I tried to reboot the system numerous times and while the bar would get so far during the loading screen, it eventually dimmed and I would just see the white screen. Research has revealed that it is a likely gpu failure as that is VERY common with these models. Then it would run until the screen would glitch out and the machine would freeze again. After a hard shut down again I could usually get it to restart after resetting pram and smc. It would stall after apple logo and get stuck on white screen. Then the problem worsened and would not start up so easily. This machine has worked great for about a year, then recently it started getting glitches on the screen and freezing, after hard shutdown it would usually restart and run for a while. I have a mid 2011 imac 27' which no longer boots up.
